Designer Notes
If you’re new to Walter Sky and were not able to try version 1 of the B02 and would like to waste a few minutes educating yourself on the origin of the pants, click here.
After a few years of use we decided to update the design of the B02. Did we ruin a good thing? Maybe, but only time will tell. Rest assured we did what we could to ensure the overall fit and performance remained the same. If for some reason these feel different to you, let's be honest — it’s probably the pandemic weight. The decision to change the pants was extremely difficult, but there were just too many occasions where I found myself wishing they had additional features, so here we are.
The main driving factor behind all of these changes came down to belt loops. Truth be told I’ve never left the house in a pair of sweatpants nor have I made it through the day in a pair. I guess I feel like I’ve given up on life if I’m still in sweats at 2pm. When I leave the house I’m always dressed in what I believe is the appropriate attire for whatever may come my way, and most of the time a belt is part of that equation. Since I wasn’t able to wear a belt with the B02 it somehow made them feel like sweatpants and that always bothered me. I also usually have a lot of unnecessary stuff in my pockets (like cool rocks I find while out wandering around) which require me to wear a belt to help keep my pants up.
The second reason for the belt loops is because I’ve managed to collect a large number of keys (school janitor status) that dangle from my carabiner. These keys need a belt loop to hang from because I don’t have enough room in my pockets (see comment above about rocks). Lastly, I have friends and family who are avid golfers and have commented that it would be nice if they could wear the pants golfing. Apparently it looked weird having their shirt tucked into a pair of pants with a drawstring waist. Once we added the belt loops it felt necessary to add a zip fly closure with a durable slotted button at the waist. We also added a welt to the front pockets in order to hide the zippers. This was also done in an attempt to class up the pants and keep them from looking too casual on the rare occasion you have to tuck your shirt in.
One of the other design features we felt necessary was a gusset. Because the increased front and back rise on the pants can lead to a slight drop crotch effect, there may be times where a bit of additional stress is put on the seams in that area. Unfortunately, a few pants came back with a blown out crotch which I’m assuming wasn’t due to a genetically modified eggplant. The gusset now helps alleviate that stress. In addition to the gusset we double stitched all seams for additional strength and durability.
Overall I’m extremely happy with how the pants turned out. If you’ve had the opportunity to test both versions of the pants, I’d love to know your thoughts. Feel free to drop me a line: hello@waltersky.com.
