Walter Sky is thrilled to collaborate with Scott Whitaker of Scott James Jewelry for a very special winter giveaway. What originally started as a weekend of adventure in the Wasatch Mountains in Northern Utah, quickly turned into much more when our team discovered a unique stone amongst the rocks on a hike through a granite boulder field.
With Scott’s artful craftsmanship, he has turned the stone into a one-of-a-kind textured signet ring that’s now up for grabs. But before we dive into the nitty gritty details of our giveaway, let’s give you a little backstory, as told by Founder Nathan Andersen himself:
This past summer, my brother Wesley and I met up with a few friends who have become unofficial brand ambassadors for Walter Sky — Scott Whittaker and William Woodward — in Northern Utah. The purpose of the trip was to photograph and film Scott in his workshop so we could learn more about his craft and share it with everyone as a story in our Field Notes section.
Scott’s roots run deep in this part of the Wasatch so it was fun to have the unofficial mayor as our personal escort. On our first day there, he showed us around his family farm, took us to his favorite swimming hole and then sat down with us for an interview about how Scott James Jewelry came to be. Day two was spent hiking around the Wasatch and swimming in high alpine lakes.
On the last day of our trip, Scott agreed to take us to one of his favorite rockhounding sites as long as we promised to never reveal its location. We loaded up my 1989 Wagoner and drove up into the mountains as far as the trail would permit. From there, it was a few short miles on foot. We spent hours searching for rocks we could take back to Scott’s workshop. It was during this time the idea for the giveaway came about.
We decided if we found a stone worthy of turning into a ring we would use it for our giveaway. Everyone packed out what they thought would be the winning rock and we made our way back down the mountain to Scott’s workshop. For me, the time spent working the stones in the workshop was by far the most enjoyable. Scott was patient enough to teach us how to use some of his equipment and then let us go to town on the rocks we brought back.
Surprisingly, after a lot of cutting, grinding and polishing, we had a number of stones we could have used for the ring, so we let the master decide which he thought would be best for this particular piece. Those of us there that day really wanted the ring; it’s truly one-of-a-kind, and a reminder of the good times we had on that trip.
We hope whoever wins this giveaway appreciates that the DNA embedded in the ring contains the infectious energy of laughing with friends, the pre-adventure excitement you get as you first start to making your way down the trail, the inner peace often only found in the outdoors, the gentle strength of the moose we walked up on as we made our way down the mountain, the cold revitalizing water of a small alpine lake after logging some long hard miles, the beauty of the fields of wildflowers amongst the aspens and cottonwoods, the energy from the lightning storm that rolled through right after we got off the mountain, and the satisfaction of a grilled cheese sandwich from a local dairy farm after being on the mountain all day.
Yes, I know, it's just a ring. A ring that could someday be passed along to a friend or a loved one who will then share in the energy obtained from all its experiences, including the ones you’ll have while wearing it.
