Some peaks get all the attention. But as the aspens turn golden and the crowds head home, we're setting our sights on the roads less traveled. Here are five under-the-radar peaks in our home states of California and Utah that we’re eyeing right now (plus what we’re packing).
1. North Peak, California
Elevation: 12,249 ft
While its neighbor Mount Conness draws the crowds, North Peak offers equally stunning views with a fraction of the traffic. This hidden gem in the Hoover Wilderness delivers everything we love about the High Sierra: solid granite, exposed ridges, and alpine lakes that mirror the fall colors.
Why Fall: The approach past Saddlebag Lake becomes a kaleidoscope of alpine color, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself on weekdays.
2. Box Elder Peak, Utah
Elevation: 11,103 ft

Often overshadowed by more popular Wasatch peaks, Box Elder offers a challenging scramble and some of the most dramatic views of Utah Valley. The north ridge provides a thrilling class 3 route that keeps things interesting without becoming technical.
Why Fall: The maple-covered slopes below the peak create one of the most vibrant fall color displays in the Wasatch, and the cooler temperatures make the exposed scrambling much more enjoyable.
3. Red Peak, California
Elevation: 11,699 ft
Tucked away in Yosemite's southeastern corner, Red Peak lives up to its name when the morning light hits its mineral-stained faces. The approach through Clark Fork meadows offers solitude that's becoming rare in Yosemite, especially during peak season.
Why Fall: September brings stable weather and the first frost, turning the meadows into a crimson carpet. Plus, you'll likely have the entire peak to yourself.
4. Mount Nebo North Peak, Utah
Elevation: 11,928 ft

The highest peak in the Wasatch Range surprisingly sees minimal traffic. The North Peak offers a challenging class 3 scramble with incredible exposure and views stretching from the Great Salt Lake to the Uintas.
Why Fall: The notorious summer lightning storms ease up, and the mountain mahogany turns a deep red that contrasts beautifully with the limestone cliffs.
5. Split Mountain, California
Elevation: 14,058 ft
While not technically unknown, this California 14er sees a fraction of the traffic of its Sierra neighbors. The Red Lake approach is steep and unrelenting, but the solitude and alpine setting make it worth every step.
Why Fall: The brutal summer heat subsides, making the waterless approach manageable, and early season snow adds character to the summit views without requiring technical gear.
What We’re Packing
WS-MT01 Tee: The foundation of any mountain kit needs to work as hard as you do. Our merino WS-MT01 combines the conservative neckline of the WS-T02 with the classic body of the WS-T01. Built with Nuyarn's innovative merino technology, it keeps performing day after day.
WS-MH02-V2 Sun Hoodie: Mountain weather can turn on a dime. Our updated Sun Hoodie weighs next to nothing but could make all the difference when temperatures drop or the sun gets fierce. It's the insurance policy you'll be glad you packed – minimal space, maximum versatility.
WS-J02 Jacket: Mountains teach you to pack smart, not heavy. The WS-J02 is our answer to variable conditions – a lightweight mid-layer that retains heat without turning into a sauna when you're working hard. Perfect for those predawn starts when you're moving fast and the temperature's all over the place.
WS-B02-V2: Taking everything we loved about the original WS-B02 and making it even better, the V2 adds belt loops and a gusset while keeping that perfect jogger-style fit. The increased front and back rise means you can roll the cuffs without compromising movement. These pants have seen us through everything from casual approaches to exposed scrambles.
WS-HAT03: Sometimes the simplest pieces make the biggest difference. Our structured snapback combines moisture-wicking fabric with perforated rear panels for extra breathability. The flexible bill means it packs down easily when you need to throw on a beanie instead.
Merino Wool Athletic Sock: Don't let the classic tube sock look fool you. Powered by Nuyarn's merino technology, they deliver technical performance that feels like your favorite comfort piece. Because when you're putting in thousands of vertical feet, your sock choice matters as much as your boots.
